just people.

people are fascinating, interesting, funny, and weird.

i marvel when i think about all the different stories that people represent. each person is one story.  when i walk around campus, it's like these stories woke up in the morning, put on legs and arms and walked right past me. i walk past living stories everyday.

i think about the mom and her son who came in the museum store today, debating about whether to buy a bug jar or not, and if it's worth it because of the cold weather that just swept over michigan this week, holding it hostage for the next 6 months. would there be any more bugs to catch? somehow it came out that she just started homeschooling this 7th grader son of hers this year. she said it was going rough and that she had cried many tears this week. i told her that i was home schooled one year, and that it really was a good thing! she left a little relieved, i think. but man, my heart goes out to her.

i think of the sophomore that just came in on a walking tour, clutching the map firmly in her hands. i love that she is just walking and discovering for its own sake. there is no other agenda on this cold, ordinary old wednesday afternoon for her. i hope everyone can feel free to abandon routine every one and awhile and just explore, discover, walk.... like she is today.

classes, work, and routine-- they go on! but i'm thankful today for people, whether strangers, friends, customers, everyone. you never know what battle they may be fighting today or what wonderful discovery they have just made. it's all significant.
