take time to be a person

this weekend i made the decision to go on a fall retreat with some people i knew really well, and a whole lot of people i didn't know at all.  the highlight for me was saturday night.  i sat in a group of around 10 senior girls, all of our voices quivering as we talked about our fears about graduating and no longer hiding under the label of "student".

we are all so busy.  you wouldn't believe it-- during free time on the retreat we were doing homework.  and it was actually quiet, and i actually got stuff done.

but anyways, one of the things someone said really stood out to me.  she said "take time to be a person".  yes, we have so many responsibilities, academic and otherwise.  but at the end of the day, we are finite human beings who cannot only give and give and give.  this isn't meant to be an "it's all about you" blog post, but i just want to make the point that we need sleep, we need connection, and we need to stop what we're doing and sit down to eat a meal.

these are some ways that i like to be a person (and not just a student):

--i take bubble baths and read a favorite book.  (even a paragraph of it!)

--i call my mom and dad, my sister, my boyfriend

--i watch one quick episode of a funny show

--i linger in the kitchen and really talk to the girls who are in there. (more than just the hurried "how are ya?" as i rush down the hall)

--i occasionally go on runs

remember that your energies don't go on forever.  you are more than just a student or an employee or an intern... you are a person.  take time to be a person.

  1. this is exactly what I have been learning lately. It is so easy to forget that I'm not just a student but that life exists outside of school. Realizing that rest is so important wether rest looks like going running, writing, or talking to a friend. Those times are important and much needed. Thanks for encouraging me :)
